We hear more and more often about fashion psychology. But what and how much do we really know? Are we sure it has only to do with the joy we experience when we buy something new? Shopping is beyond a shadow of a therapeutic doubt but the Fashion Therapy matter is something else. Let’s find out together with the best Italian expert in the sector and let’s start this new adventure in which I will literally be a guinea pig.
What is Fashion Therapy
Fashion Therapy is a new approach to the world of fashion. In a few simple words it is the study of the individual relationship, behavior and clothing. How our personal identity and the ability to communicate a mood or attitude are “influenced” by our way of dressing in a certain way rather than another. Through the choice of clothes, accessories, colors and even makeup we contribute (involuntarily before knowing this matter, and knowingly after discovering it) to transmit something, both to those who look at us and to ourselves, revealing important parts of our personality that are also capable of instill more self-esteem and trust in us. Clothing therefore becomes a fundamental part of our personal communication.
Rubric psychology of fashion
The psychology of fashion is a topic that I find very interesting both to know and to deepen so I thought of making it a column. Every last Wednesday of the month one of my outfits will be analyzed by a Fashion Therapy expert. Fiorella Annunziata, Tuscan and Milanese by adoption, who deals with digital media management, personal branding and professional advice on how fashion can help us feel better. As a simple piece of clothing it can become an important communication tool for us. Now, however, the time has come to let Fiorella speak, getting to know her better in this short interview.

Good morning Fiorella and thanks again for your availability in giving us some information on fashion therapy so that all my readers can get closer to this new topic. First, to break the ice, let’s go back a bit with a routine question.
1. I KNOW THAT BEFORE YOU HAD AN EXCELLENT OFFICE WORK IN COMMUNICATION & MARKETING, WHAT DID YOU DRIVE YOU TO LEAVE EVERYTHING FOR YOUR FREELANCE, GETTING CLOSE TO THE WORLD OF FASHION?
Hi Luna! Thank you for hosting me in your beautiful space. Let’s start immediately with a question as simple as it is fundamental. I chose the freelance profession to have the opportunity to work across the board on issues that make my heart beat faster. On one hand, communication and marketing, my academic background, and on the other, fashion, my visceral passion. When working in the office, in fact, you are framed in a single role and, moreover, the growth opportunities are slow and not always obvious. Driven by the personal need to give a name to what I was experiencing directly on myself, I discovered the psychology of fashion and I trained with a specialist course at the Fashion Psychology Institute. So I discovered that every day I dressed according to a Fashion Therapy approach and first I started talking about it through my social channels and blogs and then giving advice (and events and courses will arrive very soon!).
2. CONTINUING TO TALK ABOUT FIORELLA. DOES YOUR PERSONAL FASHION HAVE TO DO WITH THE FASHION THERAPY CONSULTANCY THAT YOU PROPOSE OR IN YOUR EVERY DAY LIFE DO YOU HAVE A TOTALLY DIFFERENT STYLE?
Absolutely yes! In the morning I always wonder how I feel before deciding my outfit! Only after I decide which clothing strategy to adopt.
3. WHAT IS THE ACCESSORY, THE GARMENT OR A DETAIL FOR YOU THAT GIVES THE MAXIMUM RESULT IN THE FASHION THERAPY AND WHICH INSTEAD IS IT ABSOLUTELY AWAY FROM LIGHT YEARS FROM THIS MATERIAL?
It is basically all subjective. There may be macro-references, but a detail can be as decisive for my person as superfluous for you. The beauty is to find out just what are the garments and combinations of clothing that make you (as well as that) feel good.
4. IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT SHOULD A PERSON START FROM TO BEGIN TO CHANGE THE WAY TO COMMUNICATE HIS PERSONAL IDENTITY?
Without a doubt you can start by asking what you want to communicate and possibly improve, then the strategy comes!
5. HOW CAN FASHION THERAPY HELP PEOPLE?
Fashion therapy helps people to feel comfortable in their clothes, situations and relationships and to reap all the benefits that a color or texture can offer. It also helps in having a clothing strategy: “how to dress what, when and why…”
